Natural resources were being destroyed, energy and water consumption was rising, and so was pollution of all kinds. Thisenvironmental destruction has continued, and one important factor has been the waythat buildings are constructed. In fact, energy use in buildings represents about 32percent of all energy use in the United States. In the early years, green builders were asmall minority, and their goals of reducing the environmental impact of buildings wereconsidered unrealistic. Now, however, the green building movement is growing, asbuilders have been able to take advantage of new technology and as the costs of thistechnology have gone down. Environmental building methods are now practical enoughto save money for builders and for building owners, even as they reduce damage to theenvironment. First, green builders try to make use of recycled materials as much as possible. In fact, vast amounts of materials such as steel, cement, and wood are used inconstruction. Now there are companies that specialize in gathering old materials, processing them, and selling them to builders for new buildings. States and cities areencouraging these companies, as the reuse of materials also means less waste indumps. For larger builders or individual homeowners, it is possible to find everythingfrom steel and cement to doors, windows, sinks, tubs, brick, and hardware.Another way that builders can reduce environmental impact is to reduce theenergy requirements of building. This can be done in several ways. One is to providean alternative, nonpolluting source of energy. The first alternative energy source to bedeveloped was solar power. With solar panels-wide, flat sheets of special material-it ispossible to produce electricity from the rays of the sun. Builders can install solarpanels on the roofs of buildings and connect them to cooling or lighting systems. Oncethe panels are installed, they provide energy at no cost and with no pollution. Another, nonpolluting solution for reducing energy use is technology known as geothermalheating. To obtain geothermal heat, builders place special pipes below ground, wheretemperatures remain constant all year. In the winter, the earth's natural heat can becollected in these pipes, and then transferred into the building's heating system. In thesummer, heat in the building can be collected and sent to the pipes underground. In the past, though, leeches were commonly used in medicine todrain blood from people. Then advances in science led to other kinds of treatments, and leeches disappeared from the sick room. Now, however, they are making acomeback. Leeches are being used after operations for the reattachment of body parts,Doc24.vnin the prevention of pain from arthritis, and in the treatment of heart disease. The useof leeches in medicine goes back at least 2,500 years. Doctors used them to treat thesick in ancient. Egypt, India, Persia, and Greece. It was believed in those days thattaking blood from patients helped to bring their bodies back into balance. This beliefand the practice of draining blood with leeches continued through the ages, reaching ahigh point in early nineteenth century France. At that time, Parisian hospitals requiredas many as million leeches year for their patients.By the middle of the nineteenth century, however, the practice of draining bloodfrom patients was becoming less popular. With better understanding of diseases andof the human body, doctors realized that taking blood from the patients (with orwithout leeches) was not always helpful and leeches made no real difference in manycases. By the twentieth century, doctors had completely abandoned the use of leechesto drain blood. But in 1985 Dr. Joseph Upton, surgeon in Boston, Massachusetts, discovered new use for them. Faced with young patient whose ear had been bittenoff by dog, Upton successfully reattached the ear in twelve-hour operation. However, within three days, the ear had turned black because blood could not movethrough it properly. During the operation, it had been fairly easy for Upton to reattachthe arteries that brought blood to his patient's ear, since artery walls are thick and easyto see. However, since the veins that carry blood away from the ear are much smallerand hard to find, Upton had not been able to reattach enough of them. If somethingwasn't done quickly, the ear would not survive.Luckily, Dr. Upton remembered an article he had read about research into theproperties of leeches. Through the results of the research were still uncertain, Uptondecided to take chance. He bought some leeches from laboratory and placed themon the boy's ear and they began to feed. The boy felt no pain because the mouths ofleeches contain natural painkiller. As the leeches sucked some of the extra blood outof the boy's ear, they added special chemical to the blood so it would not harden andform clots and it would flow more easily. Within few minutes, the boy's ear began tolose the terrible black color. The leeches had soon eaten enough and fell off. Severaldays later, after applying more leeches, the boy's ear was entirely pink and healthy.Other doctors then began to experiment with the use of leeches in the reattachment ofother body parts, and finally, in 2004, the United States Food and Drug Administrationapproved the use of medicinal leeches in reconstructive surgery.Question 16: All of the following is True about leeches EXCEPT that ______.A. they look like worms.
